New to Folk Music?

  • What exactly is Folk Music?

Country musician Mike Seeger once stated that folk music is "all the music that fits between the cracks". Early American folk music was marked by African American spirituals and work songs (sea shanties, cowboy songs, and railroad songs). In modern times, folk songs still carry on the oral tradition of storytelling. A movement known as the folk music renaissance emerged in the mid-twentieth century, resulting in a modern contemporary genre of folk music. The richness of American musical cultures, the genealogy of artistic lineages and families, and the groundbreaking efforts of artists performing in these traditions today are all highlighted by this musical genre. Steve Sloan carries on this rich musical tradition with three CD albums of country-folk songs that stir emotions and tell memorable stories.

  • What instruments are used?

Folk music is created using mainly acoustic instruments. Most commonly used in Steve's performances is his mighty Martin D-35 dreadnought guitar. The harmonica, drums, tambourine, rhythm stix, cymbals, anvil, and gazatchka can also be heard being played by Steve himself in the Old Mexico and Other Great Songs and El Paso and Other Tales albums. The Steve Sloan At The Pelican Inn album stands out among the rest as an elegantly simple and pure musical presentation using only acoustic guitar and no other instruments or voice overlays.

  • Who are the New Christy Minstrels?

Randy Sparks formed the New Christy Minstrels, an American large-ensemble folk music group, in 1961. The group has released over 20 albums and had many hits after their beginnings as leading figures in the early 1960s U.S. folk revival. Steve Sloan and Gail Randall joined the group in 1969, only a couple of years after the group won a Grammy for their first album. Currently The New Christy Minstrels Foundation, a charitable association devoted to preserving the group's recordings, officially manages and owns the group.
